SUPPLEMENTAL RESPONSE TO NOTICE OF VIOLATION NRC COMBINED INSPECTION REPORT NO. 50-272/87-08 AND 50-311/87-09 SALEM GENERATING STATION DOCKET NOS. 50-272 AND 50-311 In our _response to NRC Notice of Violation 50-272/87-08-02; 50-311/87-09-02 dated Auqust 14, 1987, PSE&G stated that the masonry wall design calculations for Salem Units 1 and 2 would be reviewed and upnated, if necessary, to reflect the current plant confiquration.
The completion of this effort was contingent upon the receipt of the orioinal out-of-plane analyses/calculations from Computech Engineering Services, Inc., the engineering firm contracted to perform the block wall analyses in 1980.
Due to delays encountered in the acquisition of the aforementioned engineering calculations, Mr. T. Varela of the NRC Reaion I staff was notified by telephone on December 15, 1987 that the completion of the evaluations would occur later than originally anticipated.
Mr. Varela acknowledqed the need for additional time to complete the evaluations and asked that the NRC be formally notified when the effort was completed.
The Computech calculations were received by PSE&G in December 1987.
Subsequent evaluation of these calculations found them to be acceptable and in agreement with the analytical summary which was available at the time of the inspection (April 7-10, 1987).
PSE&G also evaluated the remaining walls and wall rnodif ications not covered by Computech's scope of work.
A detailed design analysis of each wall was completed on January 31, 1988 and no safety concerns were discovered.
This* information has been filed for appropriate retention as a design record.
