Senior Vice President -
Nuclear Public Service Electric and Gas Company P.O. Box236, Hancocks Bridge, NJ 08038 609 339-4800 February 3, 1988 NLR-N88004 United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Document Control Desk Washington, DC 20555 Gentlemen:
IMPLEMENTATION OF LICENSE AMENDMENTS SALEM GENERATING STATION UNIT NOS. 1 AND 2 DOCKET NOS. 50-272 AND 50-311 A recent Region I inspection identified some confusion regarding implementation of three License Amendments which were approved and issued for both Unit Nos. 1 and 2 by the NRC staff.
The
, confusion involves Amendments 52, 55 and 56 for Salem Unit 2.
Unit 1 changes were implemented during the last refueling outage.
Amendment 52 addressed removal of the Boron Injection Tank (BIT).
Amendment 55 addressed increasing the boron concentration in the Refueling Water Storage Tank (RWST) and Accumulators.
Amendment 56 addressed removal of the RTD bypass piping.
The purpose of this letter is to clarify the implementation dates for these amendments.
It was and is PSE&G's intention to implement each of the above changes at the first refueling outage following approval of the amendment.
Implementation of the subject amendments requires substantial plant hardware modifications and procedural changes.
PSE&G's plans for delayed implementation of these modifications was discussed in the License Change Requests for each subject.
Therefore PSE&G reaffirms our intent to implement these modifications during the next Unit 2 refueling outage, currently scheduled for September 1988 and to withhold distribution of the subject amendments pending completion of the plant modifications necessary to implement the amendments.
Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.
Sincerely,
Document Control Desk C
