Public Service Electric and Gas Company Corbin A. McNeill, Jr.
Senior Vice President -
Nuclear Public Service Electric and Gas Company P.O. Box236, Hancocks Bridge, NJ 08038 609 339-4800 OCT O 1 1967 NLR-N87186 United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Document Control Desk Washington, DC 20555 Gentlemen:
10CFR50 APPENDIX R SAFETY EVALUATION SALEM GENERATING STATION UNIT NOS. 1 AND 2 DOCKET NOS. 50-272/50-311 Attached, per our commitment made at the recent Salem Unit 2 Appendix R inspection and confirmed in our letter dated September 18, 1987, is the safety evaluation for the discrepancies in our Appendix R program for Salem Unit Nos. 1 and 2.
The safety evaluation concludes that continued operation of Salem Unit Nos. 1 and 2 is justified based on the use of compensatory measures which provide reasonable assurance that postulated fire damage would be limited and at least two electrical trains would be available for safe shutdown.
\\ PSE&G is scheduled to meet with Region I NRC personnel on October 7, 1987.
Should you have any questions on the attached safety evaluation, please advise us as soon as possible so we can properly address them at the meeting.
Sincerely,
\\~h"' ~. me ~tN\\} ~
