Vice President -

Public Service Electric and Gas Company P.O. Box 236, H ancocks Bridge, NJ 08038 609 339-4800 Nuclear MAR 2 5* 1987 NLR-N87CJ40 United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Document Control Desk Washington, DC 20555 IMPLEMENTATION OF GENERIC LETTER 86-10 SALEM GENERATING STATION DOCKET NOS. 50-272 AND 50-311 The purpose of this letter is to advise you of the status of Public Service Electric and Gas's (PSE&G) implementation of Generic Letter 86-10 for the Salem Generating Station.

Per the guidance of the Generic Letter, the schedule for submittal of the Final Safety Analysis Report (FSAR) update for Salem would be July 22, 1987.

Currently, PSE&G is undergoing a major effort to better human engineer, upgrade and update various components of the Salem Fire Protection Program.

Activities include, but are not limited to, updates to the Fire Hazards Analysis (FHA) and Interaction Analysis (IA), consolidation of fire protection commitments into an integrated package; revision of procedures to incorporate any new requirements resulting from the FHA and IA updates, and performing the action requested in Generic Letter 86-10.

Additionally, PSE&G has a number of Appendix R exemption requests pending which would affect the scope of our submittal.

Because of the large scope of improvements being made to the Salem Fire Protection Program, the effort will not be completed in time to be included in the annual FSAR update in July.

It is PSE&G's plan to delay submittal of that portion of the FSAR update pursuant to Generic Letter 86-10 until the fourth quarter of 1987.

If you should have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Sincerely,

Document Control Desk C
