Public Service Electric and Gas Company P.O. Box236, Han cocks Bridge, NJ 08038 609 339-4800 Nuclear U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Corrrrnission Off ice of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Division of Licensing Washington, D. c. 20555 August 2, 1985 Attention:

Mr. Steven A. Varga, Chief Operating Reactors Branch, No. 1 Gentlemen:

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FOR GENERIC LETTER 83-28 UNITS NO. 1 AND 2 SALEM GENERATING STATION DOCKET NOS. 50-272 AND 50-311 In response to a request by Mr. L. Crocker of your staff, we are providing additi9nal details regarding our Post Trip Review Program.

The NRC staff, in its Salem Restart Authorization, dated April 29, 1983, stated that our Administrative Directive, AD-16, " *** specifies a sufficiently detailed review of an event to determine its cause and whether equipment functioned as designed."

Our methods and criteria for comparing event information with known or expected plant behavior are delineated in AD-16 which specifies that two SRO-licensed operations personnel (i.e. the Senior Nuclear Shift Supervisor and the STA qualified Shift Supervisor) shall review events for many areas of concern including equipment and system performance.

An integral part of the training and testing of our RO and SRO licensed personnel includes the design performance of safety related equipment.

That information is extracted from the FSAR, Technical Specifications, Vendor Technical Manuals, and numerous other sources.

Following an event, this knowledge of equipment design (and the various technical sources, themselves, where a question of proper equipment performance arises) is used in our evaluation of those cases where safety related equipment is called upon to perform.
