CONFORMANCE TO REGULATORY GUIDE 1.97 REQUIREMENTS FOR EMERGENCY RESPONSE CAPABILITY SUPPLEMENT 1 TO NUREG-0737 SALEM GENERATING STATION UNITS NO. 1 AND 2 DOCKET NOS. 50-272 AND 50-311 Our letter dated August 9, 1984 stated that the thermocouples for the "Component Cooling Water Temperature to ESF System" were located in a harsh environment and would be qualified to meet Regulatory Guide 1.97.

Further investigation has revealed that they are actually located in mild environments as shown below:

TE-602A Located on elevation 84' O" in the No. 11 Component Cooling Water Heat Exchanger Room.

Max. radiation is 1 x 103 rad for 40 years plus 30 days accident.

Max. temperature is 110°F (This area not subjected to HELB).

(Unit 2 is similar)

TE-602B Located on elevation 84' O" in the No. 12 Component Cooling Water Heat Exchanger Room.

Max. radiation is 1 x 103 rad for 40 years plus 30 days accident.

Mr. Steven 8-1-85 Max. temperature is 110°F (This area not subjected to HELB).
