UNRESOLVED ITEMS -

COMBINED INSPECTION REPORT_ NOS~ 50-272/84-46 AND 50-311/84-46 SALEM GENERATING STATION UNIT NOS. 1 AND 2 DOCKET NOS. 50-272 AND 50-311 Your letter dated April 2, 1985 on the subject inspection identified two unresolved items, namely:

1).

Inadequate fire drill participation by fire brigade members, and 2).

Incomplete Biennial audit of the facility fire protection program.

Information concerning these items was provided to the NRC inspector (Mr. A. Krasopoulos) during his supplemental site visit (April 1-4, 1985) and in a subsequent meeting with him in your office on April 25, 1985.

It is our understanding that the first item is closed. provides the information to close the second item.

Incomplete Biennial Audit (50-272/84-46-02 & 50-311/84-46-02)

Technical Specification 6.5.2.8.h requires that the facility fire protection program and implementing procedures be audited at least once per 24 months.

QA Programmatic controls associated with fire protection are audited as a part of the two-year audit cycle required by ANS 3.2/ ANSI Nl8.7.

In addition, fire protection -

unique administrative controls, such as fire brigade training, control of combustibles and ignition sources, and inspection/test of fire protection equipment are audited annually.

As a result of discussions with Mr. A. Krasopoulos, it is our understanding that the following additional measures will close this item:

1.

Future programmatic audits of Design Control will address fire protection-unique controls.

2.

Annual fire protection audits will include examination of document controls associated with fire protection procedures.

These measures will be implemented by November 30, 1985 *
