u. s. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Off ice of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Division of Licensing Washington, DC 20555 Attention:

Mr. Steven A. Varga, Chief Operating Reactors Branch, No. 1 SALEM UNIT 2 TURBINE INSPECTION SALEM GENERATING STATION UNIT NO. 2 DOCKET NO. 50-311 The purpose of this transmittal is to inform you of the actions that we have taken with regard to the turbine inspection license condition stated in Paragraph 2.C(l7) of the Salem Unit 2 Operating License.

The basis of this requirement was to insure an inspection of the turbine would be conducted before any postulated disc cracks, particularly those associated with stress corrosion cracking, would grow to more than one-half the critical depth.

During the recently completed refueling outage, the three Unit 2 LP rotors were removed from the turbine and replaced with refurbished rotors.

These new rotors were refurbished by Westinghouse utilizing higher strength disc materials, an improved method to attach the discs to the shaft, and incorporating a heavier disc and keyplate design. These changes significantly reduce the susceptibility of the keyway region to stress corrosion cracking.

During the refurbishment, all new and re-used elements of each of the LP rotor assemblies received all inspections and tests required by Westinghouse and PSE&G to assure a level of quality commensurate with a new rotor and meeting applicable NRC requirements.
