GENERIC LETTER 84-24 CERTIFICATION OF COMPLIANCE TO 10CFR50.49 ENVIRONMENTAL QUALIFICATION OF ELECTRIC EQUIPMENT IMPORTANT TO SAFETY FOR NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS SALEM GENERATING STATION DOCKET NOS. 50-272 and 50-311

In response to the subject generic letter, PSE&G has reviewed the equipment qualification program established for Salem Units 1 and 2.

The methodology utilized to establish the program and commitments provided to resolve the deficiencies previously identified have been accepted by the NRC in the SER for Unit 1 dated December 5, 1984 and the SER for Unit 2 dated January 14, 1985.

We have reviewed our program for compliance to the require-ments of 10CFR50.49 and to the best of our knowledge certify that:

a)

PSE&G has in place and is implementing an Environmental Qualification Program that will satisfy the requirements of 10CFR50.49 within the currently approved schedule (as approved in the SER's) for the plants without further extension.

The plants have at least one path to safe shutdown using fully qualified equipment, or have submitted justification for continued safe operation (JCO) pending full qualification of any equipment not fully qualified; and c)

All other equipment within the scope of 50.49 is either fully qualified or a JCO has been submitted pending full qualification.

Additionally, the concerns identified in NRC IE Bulletin 82-04 and IE Information Notices 82-11, 82-52, 83-45, 83-72, 84-23, 84-44, 84-47, 84-57, 84-68 and 84-78 have been considered in our review.
