20555 Attention:

Mr. Steven A. Varga, Chief Operations Reactors Branch 1 Division of Licensing Gentlemen:

CONTROL ROOM EMERGENCY VENTILATION DURING ACCIDENT CONDITIONS UNIT NOS. 1 AND 2 SALEM GENERATING STATION DOCKET NOS. 50-272 AND 50-311 This letter is to confirm a commitment made at an October 18, 1984 meeting between PSE&G and the NRC staff to discuss concerns that arose from our request for a license amendment regarding control room emergency ventilation system testing (LCR 83-07).

In this meeting, we committed to modify our emergency plan and pertinent procedures to provide for the evaluation of control room/outside air conditions to determine the preferred mode of control room emergency ventilation system operation.

We have completed a review of our capabilities for making the necessary determination and of the procedures to be changed.

We are satisfied that, using present instrumentation and techniques, we can evaluate accident conditions and align the ventilation system for optimum protection of control room personnel.

The appropriate procedures will be modified to provide specific instructions and criteria.
