Mr. Steven A. Varga, Chief Operating Reactors Branch, No. 1

Dear Mr. Varga:

INADEQUATE CORE COOLING TMI ITEM II.F.2 SALEM GENERATING STATION DOCKET NOS. 50-272 AND 50-311 This is to confirm our previous transmittal which stated that no error is introduced in reactor vessel level indication due to vertical section of Reactor Vessel Level Instrumentation System (RVLIS) impulse lines without temperature compensation.

The following Westinghouse criteria identify when RTDs are not required for reactor vessel level error correction:

a)

Reference leg risers less than 2 ft.

b)

Reference leg risers greater than 2 ft where the "up" riser is cancelled by a "down" riser within an isothermal area.

c)

Impulse lines routed together in a common isothermal area.

d)

Horizontal runs of impulse lines.
