L May 18, 1984 RESPONSE TO QUARTERLY REPORT NUCLEAR OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE APRIL 24, 1984 IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM Progress toward completion of the PSE&G Improvement Program Action Plans continues on or ahead of the schedule submitted to the NRC.

We a re tracking to the internal working schedule which is more optimistic relative to completion dates for each of the Action Plans.

As of May 1, 1984, 51 of 57 planned milestones have been accomplished and we have expended 10,802 mandays of effort ag~inst the planned 10,051 mandays.

There has been substantial progress during this* report period.

The performance of Nuclear Department personnel continues to be equal to the challenge.

Response to Quarterly Report NUCLEAR DEPARTMENT STAFFING 5/18/84 The Nuclear Department Staffing Plan is being accelerated to meet our year end staffing goals.

In the first four months of 1984, we have hired 102 employees while losing 12 through attrition (less than 1% turnover).

The total number of personnel as of April 30, 1984 is 1274.

Along with the increases made to the employment and placement staff, open-houses, search firms, and a strong advertising program are being used to increase appiicant activity flow with contractors and consultants filling any gaps in staffing levels.

SAFETY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS Efforts are continuing to identify comparable nuclear plants and available sources of industry standards.

NOC comments on those performance indicators presented are being incorporated
