- u. s. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Off ice of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Division of Licensing Washington, D. c.
20555 Attention:
Mr. Steven A. Varga, Chief Operating Reactors Branch, No. 1
Dear Mr. Varga:
REQUIREMENTS FOR EMERGENCY RESPONSE CAPABILITY SUPPLEMENT 1 TO NUREG 0737 REVISED MILESTONE SCHEDULE UNITS NO. 1 AND 2 SALEM GENERATING STATION DOCKET NOS. 50-272 AND 50-311 In a letter, dated December 19, 1983, PSE&G provided a revised milestone schedule for implementing the requirements for emergency response capability (Generic Letter 82-33).
PSE&G hereby requests extensions on completion of two items on that schedule: implementation of Regulatory Guide 1.97 commitments on Unit No. 2 and implemention of Emergency Operating Procedures
( EOPs)
- As indicated in our letter of March 30, 1984, the installation of a radiation monitor in the Unit No. 2 electrical penetration area was delayed because of vendor delivery problems.
The monitor has been installed, but we have encountered hardware and software problems during functional testing.
We anticipate that with a vendor representative on site we will be able to declare the monitor functional within 30 days.
Accordingly, we request an extension of our schedule to April 30, 1984.

Mr. Steven 3/5/84 PSE&G intends to validate EOPs on the simulator.
We have been involved in the validation process since June, 1983, but because of problems with the simulator we have not been able to complete validation.
The process has been beneficial in identifying modeling problems with the simulator and problems with the arrangement of the procedures.
Our original schedule has been affected also by revisions to the Emergency Response Guidelines which required changes to procedures and basis documents.
Operator training on the procedures began on schedule, but in order to provide the in-depth training and simulator practice, we request that the date for implementing EOPs (without SPDS) be extended to March, 1985.
Should you have any questions, please call us.
Sincerely, E. A. Lid en Manager -
