20555 Attention:
Mr. Steven A. Varga, Chief Operating Reactors Branch, No. 1
Dear Mr. Varga:
REQUIREMENTS FOR EMERGENCY RESPONSE CAPABILITY SUPPLEMENT 1 TO NUREG 0737 REQUEST FOR EXTENSION UNIT NO. 1 SALEM GENERATING STATION DOCKET NO. 50-272 In our April 15, 1983 response to Generic Letter 82-33 and in subsequent letters, ~SE&G had indicated that implementation of Regulatory Guide 1.97 requirements was complete for Unit 1 as detailed in our compliance report dated September 21, 1983.
During a recent review of our implementation, we determined that a radiation monitor had not been installed in the Unit 1 electrical penetration area.
To rectify the omission, PSE&G has contacted a vendor who had indicated he can provide a monitor within 45 days of our placing an order.
Concurrently, we are contacting other utilities to determine whether a monitor can be delivered more quickly.
In either case, it is our intent to have this monitor operational prior to restart from the refueling outage currently in progress.
We hereby request an extension of the Unit 1 implementation date for Regulatory Guide 1.97.
We anticipate receiving the monitor on or before May 20, 1984, and declaring it operable on or before June 20, 1984.

Mr. Steven Varga 2 -
4/06/84 We have determined that there is no safety significance to this delay, since there is no normal or emergency evolution that would require personnel to be in the electrical penetration area.
Should you have any questions, please call us.
Sincerely, I.
