General Manager Nuclear Assurance and Regulation September 6, 1983 Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission 7920 Norfolk Avenue Bethesda, Maryland 20014 Attention:
Mr. Albert Schwencer, Chief Licensing Branch 2 Division of Licensing Gentlemen:
SCHEDULE FOR SUBMITTALS IN RESPONSE TO NRC GENERIC LETTER 83-28

- 1) Letter, D. G. Eisenhut to All Licensees of Operating Reactors et al, "Required Actions Based on Generic Implications of Salem ATWS Events (Generic Letter 83-28),"

- 2) Letter, T. J. Dente to D. G. Eisenhut, "Schedule for Submittals in Response to NRC Generic Letter 83-28," September 2, 1983, BWROG 83-29.
This letter requests an extension of time for submittals in response to the NRC letter (Reference 1) for the BWR plant owned by Public Service Electric and Gas Company.
Public Service Electric and Gas Company is a member of the BWR Owner's Group (BWROG) and we have endorsed the BWROG re-sponse to NRC generic letter 83-28 (Reference 2).
We are participating in the group's generic evaluation and in order to best utilize this BWROG effort, a time extension is needed.
Because Hope Creek Generating Station is still under con-struction with initial operation scheduled for January 1986 and because the Hope Creek plant does not share the design features which failed at the Salem plant, we consider a time extension to have no significant impact on public health and safety.

Mr. D. 9/6/83 While participating in the BWROG program, we will evaluate our plant capabilities in more detail.
After completion of the BWROG-developed guidelines for assessing plant capabil-ities in response to Reference 1, we will develop the NRC requested documentation of our plant assessment and submit this response to the NRC on or before February 29, 1984.
Please advise us if you wish to discuss our response program in detail.
Very truly yours, CC:
