20555 Attention:
Mr. Steven Varga, Chief Operations Reactors Branch 1 Division of Licensing Gentlemen:
SUPPLEMENT TO REQUEST FOR AMENDMENT FACILITY OPERATING LICENSE DPR-70 NO. 1 UNIT SALEM GENERATING STATION DOCKET NO. 50-272 Ref:
LCR 83-04 Our letter of July 22, 1983 transmitted a request for license amendment to extend the interval for the Integrated Leak Rate Test (ILRT) at the Salem Generating Station Unit 1.
This letter provides additional information in support of the July 22, 1983 application.
At the time of our original application, the Cycle 5 outage was scheduled for August 1984 for Unit 1, with Unit 2 scheduled in the Spring of 1984.
PSE&G has decided to interchange Unit 1 and Unit 2 outage schedules such that the Unit 1 outage will commence May 31, 1984.
This revised outage schedule will ensure that the ILRT will be performed well within the 5-year interval endorsed in the current industry standard, ANSI N56.8-1981.
In addition to rescheduling the Cycle 5 outage, we will imple-ment the following increased surveillance program.
Surveillance of containment isolation valves, which have exhibited high or moderately high leakage rates during the previous local leak rate tests will be increased for those valves which are testable during power operation.
This includes valves lVC-1, lVC-2, lVC-3, lVC-4, lVC-7, lVC-8, lVC-9 and lVC-10.
Surveillance will be increased by reducing the scheduled intervals from once every 8308240503 830819 PDR ADOC~ 05000272 p

Valves not testable during power operation will be tested when the earliest opportunity exists; e.g., unscheduled cold shutdown with affected portions of the systems drained.
This includes valves 12CS-2, llCA-330, 12CA-330, lCC-136, lCC-215, lCV-74, lFP-147 and lFP-148.
