CHANGE TO LICENSE OPERATOR REQUALIFICATION PROGRAM SALEM GENERATING STATION UNITS 1 AND 2 DOCKETS NOS. 50-272 AND 50-311 Attached is PSE&G Nuclear Department, Training Procedure TP-305 which represents a change to the Licensed Operator Requalification Program taught at PSE&G Nuclear Training Center in Salem, New Jersey. This change has been necessitated by the need to incor-porate training on the new Emergency Operating Procedures in an accelerated fashion to all licensed operators.

In the past each shift was brought to the Training Center for a seven or eight week period annually and received the entire Licensed Operator Requalification Program and annual examination in one block of time. This year it is our intent to factor in a two week training segment on the new Emergency Operating and associated procedures. The training will consist of both classroom lecture, discussion and operations on the Salem Unit 2 reference simulator. To ensure that all operators receive uniform training in a timely fashion, it will be necessary to break the eight week requalification training program into smaller segments. In order to accomplish this, it is our intent to teach the eight weeks in four two-week segments rotating five shifts through each two week segment in turn. At the end of each two week segment, an examination will be given that covers the material taught in that two week segment. All operators will be required to achieve the minimum required score of 70%

on each of these examinations. Anyone failing to achieve a score of 70% on any one segment or an overall average of 80%

for all of the segments will be required to take remedial training '2..

Nuclear Regulatory Cormnission 8/9/83 There will be no change in the content or conduct of the Requali-f ication Training Program with the exception of changing from an eight week block of training including an annual examination to four two~week blocks of training with the annual examination administered in segments. At the end of this year's training cycle, we will determine whether we will *continue with the segmented format or return to the eight week block of training.

We request that you review the attached training procedure and provide any appropriate cormnents prior to the cormnencement of our. annual requalification session on September 5, 1983.
