SAFETY EVALUATION REPORT FOR ENVIRONMENTAL QUALIFICATION OF SAFETY-RELATED ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT SALEM GENERATING STATION UNITS NO. 1 AND 2 DOCKET NOS. 50-272 AND 50-311 The subject SER's forwarded the Franklin Research Center's evaluation of PSE&G's Equipment Qualification Report for Salem Unit 1 and 2.
The SER's requested a response within thirty (30) days for items in NRC categories lB, 2A and 2B for which justification for continued operation was not previously submitted to the NRC or Franklin Institute.
The FRC report groups equipment in NRC categories lB, 2A and 2B which pertain to the following types of equipment:
- 1)
Category lB -
Equipment that PSE&G has committed to replace, redesign or relocate.
- 2)
Category 2A -
Equipment qualification not established based on the FRC's review of documentation.
- 3)
Category 2B -
Equipment not qualified based on the FRC's review of documentation.
In response to the FRC's findings, PSE&G offers the following:

Category lB Items -
The FRC's report listed 51 and 54 items for Unit 1 and 2, respectively, in category lB.

PSE&G has previously submitted to the NRC justification for continued operation for these items.
The FRC report acknowledges that PSE&G has furnished justification for continued operation for Category lB items.
No further justification is considered necessary for these items.

Category 2A Items -
The FRC's report listed 14 items each for Unit 1 and 2 in Category 2A.
PSE&G has either previously submitted to the NRC justification for continued operation for items in this category or considers the equipment to be qualified based on existing docum~ntation.
No further justification is considered necessary for these items.
- 3)
Category 2B Items -
The FRC's report did not classify any Salem Station equipment as Category 2B.
No further action is required for this item.
