Dear Mr. Varga:
PRESSURIZER LEVEL CHANNEL INTERACTION AND TRANSMITTER MALFUNCTION SALEM GENERATING STATION UNIT NO. 1 DOCKET NO. 50-272 On October 7, 1982, Public Service Electric and Gas Company requested a one time deferral of the Channel Functional Test for the Pressurizer Water Level-High Protection Channels I and II, until the scheduled October 16, 1982 refueling outage.
In granting this request, the NRC had two stipulations:
a) that the apparent interaction between Channels I and III be investi-gated; b) that the cause of the malfunction of Channel III be investigated.
Investigation has determined that the interaction was most probably caused by hydraulically cross connected channels.
Instrument lines have been reworked to correct the problem.
The cause of the malfunction of Channel III was the failure of a Rosemount pressure transmitter.
The failure was the third occurrence of instability in this type (Model 1153HDS) trans-mitter.
PSE&G returned one failed transmitter to the manufac-turer for testing where it exhibited the same instability experienced at Salem.
