Box 570, Newark, NJ 07101 June 2, 1982 Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission 7920 Norfolk Avenue Bethesda, MD 20014 Attention: Mr. Steven A. Varga, Chief Operating Reactors Branch 1 Division of Licensing Gentlemen:

CONTROL SYSTEM FAILURES NO. 2 UNIT SALEM NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION DOCKET NO. 50-311 This letter transmits to you, in its enclosure, PSE&G's final response to your April 16, 1981 request for informa-tion on control system failures. This analysis considers failure modes of major NSSS systems' equipment, including system interrelationships. These relationships include control systems receiving power from common power sources and input signals from common sensors* or process taps for each control loop.

The systems reviewed were:

1. Steam Dump
2. Excore Nuclear Instrumentation
3. Pressurizer Pressure and Level Control
4. Feedwater Control
5. Rod Control The systems were evaluated for:
1. Break of common instrument lines
2. Loss of Power to all components powered from a single source
3. Break of any single instrument line Based on the enclosed analysis, the events postulated in Chapter 14 of the Salem FSAR adequately bound the conse-quences of single control system failures.
