SEISMIC QUALIFICATION OF AUXILIARY FEEDWATER SYSTEM NO. 1 AND 2 UNITS SALEM NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION DOCKET NOS. 50-272 AND 50-311 In response to your January 7, 1982 letter, the additional information requested concerning the seismic qualification of the Salem Auxiliary Feedwater System is provided in the attached sketch.
With regard to Item (c) of your request, valves 1AF71 and 1AF72 (see sketch) are not anchored with three orthogonal restraints.
These valves are anchored to the Auxiliary Building wall, which is Seismic Category I.
We have per-formed a stress review of these valves and anchors and have determined that the present anchor meets the intent of your request.
The valves are largely protected from potential debris falling in the Service Building due to a seismic event by the trench in the floor in which they are located.
However, a protective steel structure will be provided off the Seismic Category I wall.
This new structure will also incorporate seismic guides for additional protection of these valves, with the existing anchor serving as an axial restraint in addition to its original function.
