Public Service Electric and Gas Company 80 Park Plaza Newark, N.J. 07101 Phone 201/430-7000 November 4, 1981 Mr. Harold Denton Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation

u. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555 Attention:

Mr. Steven A. Varga, Chief Operating Reactors Branch 1 Division of Licensing Gentlemen:

STATUS OF INSTALLATION AND TESTING OF PROMPT ALERTING AND NOTIFICATION SYSTEM SALEM GENERATING STATION UNIT NOS. 1 AND 2 DOCKET NOS. 50-272 AND 50-311 On July 24, 1981 we provided you with information on past, present, and projected prompt notification system milestones.

Since that date we have experienced a number of delays which pre-vented us from meeting some of those projected milestones.

These delays were due primarily to problems associated with siren activation equipment and securing rights-of-way or easements for installation of sirens.

In a number of locations, sirens or poles were relocated in order to accommodate local residents or town governments.

we do not anticipate these delays affecting completion

  • of the siren system, as described in our May 26, 1981 submittal of the Salem Generating Station Emergency Plan, by the NRC's proposed implementation date of February 1, 1982.

.As shown in enclosure 1, the siren system acoustical test will be performed between October 28, 1981 and November 13, 1981.

This test will provide data for an engineering evaluation of the

~dren system.

When all sirens have met manufacturer's acceptance criteria and PSE&G's siren system design specifications, we will consider the system complete and in compliance with all criteria presented in.Appendix 3, Sections B.2.a,b,c, of NUREG-0654, FEMA-R,ep-1, R,ev. 1.

We expect the siren system to be functionally tested and operationally turned over to the States of Delaware and New Jersey by January 1, 1982.

.Although the siren system acoustic testing will be complete by November 13, 1981, we recognize the potential need for refinement as a result of this test and the siren system test to be scheduled

Mr. Harold Denton Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission 11/4/81 in early January.

These refinements which may include additional sirens or alternate alerting systems, such as tone actuated EBS radio receivers, will be completed as soon as possible following the test.

At present, proposals for EBS radio receivers are being evaluated and a purchase order for an initial stock of radios is expected to be issued by November 15, 1981.

~µy J. M. Zupko, Jr.
