MEMORANDUM FOR:
Steven A. Varga, Chief~
Division of Licensing FROM:
Olan D. Parr, Chief, Auxiliary Systems Branch Division of Systems Integration
SUBJECT:
SALEM AUXILIARY FEEDli!ATER SYSTEM RELIABILITY Supplement 5 to the Salem Unit 2 Safety Evaluation Report identified the following concerns related to the auxiliary feedwater (AHJ) system reliability:
(l) Availability of the spool piece for lining up the service water system to supply AHJ during and right after a tornado; and (2) Time available for operator action to prevent pump damage in the event of tornado-induced loss of suction to the AFW pumps.
In response to the first concern, PSE&G modified plant procedures to require spool piece installation in the event of a tornado warning and a Sl!rveillance requirement was placed in the Unit 2 Technical Specifications to require that the spool piece be verified as on-site once per 12 months.
For the second concern, PSE&G committed, to install in Unit 2 an automatic low suction pressure t.rip for each AFW pump. This modification is to be installed during the ~irst refueling outage.
The above concerns apply to Salem Unit l also. It is therefore our position that the licensee should implement the above procedural changes and modifications for Salem Unit l.
