I GENERIC LETTER 81-01 QUALIFICATION OF INSPECTION~ EXAMINATION, TESTING~ AND AUDIT PERSONNEL NO. 1 AND 2 UNITS SALEM NUCLEAR GENREATING STATION DOCKET NOS. 50-272 AND 50-311 Pursuant to the above referenced letter; Public Service Electric and Gas Company has reviewed regulatory positions C.5; 6~ 7~ 8; and 10 of Regulatory Guide 1.58 Revision 1, dated September 1980 and Regulatory Guide 1.146~ dated August 1980 and agrees to comply with their recommendations with one exception.

Paragraph 6 of Regulatory Guide 1. 58 requires for " ****

Level I; II; and III personnel~ the candidate should be a high school graduate or have earned the General Education Development Equivalent of a high school diploma."

Both Public Service Electric and Gas Company and the American National Standard ANSI/ASME N45.2.6~1978~ Para. 3.5 have recognized" *** that other factors may provide reasonable assurance that a person can competently perform a particular task."

The other factors which may demonstrate c~pability in a given job are previous performance or satisfactory com-pletion of testing.

These two factors will be considered when evaluating education and experience requirements for certification.

The Salem program will be revised to reflect the recommenda-tions of these documents.
