Frederick W. Schneider Vice President Public Service Electric and Gas Company 80 Park Plaza *Newark, N.J. 07101 201/430-7373 Production May 20, 1981 Mr. Boyce H. Grier, Director U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region 1 631 Park Avenue King of Prussia, Pennsylvania 19406

Dear Mr. Grier:

FIRE PROTECTION PROGRAM NO. 1 AND 2 UNITS SALEM NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION DOCKET NOS. 50-272 AND 50-311 We have received your letter of May 5, 1981, regarding a finding in the recent fire protection audit at Salem.

This finding involved a potential fire in the 480 volt switchgear room, elevation 84', which might make certain redundant instrument channels inoperable.

In order to rectify this situation, one cable in each unit either had to be rerouted or protected by a one (1) hour rated fire barrier.

As of this date, the.affected cable in each unit has been re-routed so that it is independent of the 480 volt switchgear room, precluding a fire causing loss of.redundant instrumentation.

Your letter indicated that final engineering verification of the cable interaction study was scheduled. to be completed by June 5, 1981.

As a result of the recent audit at Salem, the team findings and the time required of our engineering personnel to assist in this audit have impacted the verification schedule.

Based on the additional analysis and verification now required, verification of the cable interaction study is scheduled to be completed by July 15, 1981.
