Mr. Frank J. Miraglia, Chief Licensing Branch 3 Division of Licensing Gentlemen:

FIRE PROTECTION PROGRAM NO. 1 AND 2 UNITS SALEM NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION DOCKET NOS. 50-272 AND 50-311 We have reviewed the NRC Staff's "Summary of Meetings and Site Visit to Review the PSE&G Cable Interaction Study", dated May 11, 1981.

The following information is provided in response to the findings contained therein.

PSE&G commits to implement the action items resulting from the Staff's findings as identified in the May 11, 1981 summary in accordance with the schedules set forth therein.

A possible exception, however, may be completing the installation of all emergency lighting prior to exceeding 5 percent power on Unit 2, and concurrently on Unit 1.

In the event this cannot be achieved, we propose to implement the following measures until all emergency lighting has been installed.

a.

A. continuous fire watch will be established in the relay room.

b.

Sufficient dedicated portable battery powered lighting will be provided for the operating personnel necessary to achieve cold shutdown.

With regard to cable wrapping, we have previously indicated that all cable wrapping operations would be completed by June 15, 1981.

Mr. Frank J. Miraglia USNRC 5-14-81 As a result of your audit, additional cables and panels have been identified as requiring protection.

We have evaluated these additional requirements and have determined that, based on vendor material delivery schedules, this work can now be completed by July 31, 1981.

The overall cable interaction program verification has not yet been completed.

In the event this verification indicates additional protection is required, that work will proceed on an expedited schedule.

We will advise you of any additional require-ments identified and our schedule for completion.

We have previously confirmed that a response to Generic Letter 81-12 would be provided by May 19,, 1981.

Since our overall program verification cannot be completed until July 15, 1981, we will provide a partial response to Generic Letter 81-12 by July 17, 1981.

A final response, including the additional information requested during your recent audit, will be provided by August 17, 1981.
