Mr. Thomas M. Novak, Assistant Director for Operating Reactors, Division of Licensing
Dear Mr. Novak:
ENVIRONMENTAL QUALIFICATIO~ OF SAFETY-RELATED ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT UNIT NO. 1 SALEM GENERATING STATION DOCKET' NO. 50-272 We have reviewed the list of NRC identified deficiencies in your letter, dated February 23, 1981, concerning "Environmental Qualification of Safety-Related Electrical Equipment".
We have performed a review of equipment at Salem Unit 1 with regard to environmental qualification per Bulletin 79-0lB and NUREG-0588.
Our initial report, subsequent submittals, and in-house documentation provides the needed information to support the safe operation of Salem Unit No. 1.
Immediate corrective actions such as procedure changes and design changes have been completed in those cases deemed necessary for plant safety.
Fully qualified replacement equipment, where necessary, will be installed prior to June 30, 1982 in accordance with the Order for Modification of License Con-cerning Environmental Qualification of Safety-Related Electrical Equipment dated October 24, 1980.
We have found the list of deficiencies in your letter to be substantially the same as those considered in our review efforts.
Therefore, since appropriate corrective action has been taken, we believe that Salem Unit No. 1 can continue to operate in a safe manner.
If you have any further questions on this matter, we will be pleased to discuss them with you.
cc Sincerely, Director, Division~of Licensing Off ice of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C.
