Public Service Electric and Gas Company 80 Park Place Newark, N.J. 07101 Phone 201/430-7000 December 1, 1980 Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C.

20555 Attention:

Mr. Frank J. Miraglia, Chief Licensing Branch 3 Division of Licensing Gentlemen:

IMPACT OF LAC FIRE COMPANY NO. 2 UNIT SALEM NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION DOCKET NO. 50-311 Your letter of November 17~ 1980 requested an evaluation of the impact of the recent Lower Alloways Creek (LAC) Fire Company vote concerning response to fire calls at the Salem Nuclear Generating Station on the fire protection program and emergency preparedness efforts.

With regard to the fire protection program, the Salem Sta-tion Fire Protection Program, fire protection systems and Fire Brigade are completely self-sufficient with respect to all fire fighting requirements.

The LAC Fire Company, lo-cated approximately 8 miles from the station, is a volunteer fire company that could provide supplemental backup fire fighting assistance, although no dependence is placed upon them, or any other fire company.

Any request for supple-mental backup fire fighting assistance is initiated through a telephone call to the Salem Fire Company Dispatcher.

The Dispatcher, in turn, would request the assistance from any of a number of local Salem County volunteer fire companies, including LAC, which could respond to the call.

With regard to emergency preparedness efforts, any fire com-pany involvement is through agreements with the State of New Jersey.

Ba~d on ~he above, we find the recent LAC Fire-Company vote has ~o impact on our fire protection program and emer-gency preiaredness efforts.
