Production June 6, 1980 Mr. Boyce H. Grier, Director U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Off ice of Inspection and Enforcement Region 1 631 Park Avenue King of Prussia, Pennsylvania 19406

Dear Mr. Grier:

NRC IE BULLETIN NO. 80-05 NO. 1 AND 2 UNITS SALEM GENERATING STATION In response to your letter of March 10, 1980, t~ansmitting NRC IE Bulletin 80-05, which was received on March 14, 1980, the following response is hereby*submitted for your review.

Salem Units No. 1 & 2 have had vacuum breakers installed on the CVCS Holdup Tanks (3 per unit) to prevent collapse of the tanks in the event a vacuum is generated within the tank. The vacuum breakers and associated piping hav*e been sized to admit cover gas quickly enough to keep up with maximum rate of liquid removal of the tank. The vacuum relief valves will be covered by our-inservice test program. Since the tanks are located .

inside-the building, there is no need for freeze protection._

The vacuum breakers draw their cover gas from the plant con-taminated ventilation system. The gas mixture within the tanks is automatically monitored for both hydrogen and oxygen by the gas sampler in the gaseous radwaste system, so that nitrogen purging can be performed before an explosive mixture can be generated, should that situation arise.

If you require agc;l_:i, tional information, we will be pleased to discuss it with you.

Sincerely, Attach.
