May 28, 1980 Gary L. Milhollin, Esq., Chairman 1815 Jefferson Street Dr. James C. Lamb, I II 313 Woodhaven Road Madison, Wisconsin 53711 Chapel Hill, North Carolina 27514 Gentlemen:

Mr. Frederick J. Shon Atomic Safety and Licensing Board Panel U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C.

20555 In the Matter of PUBLIC SERVICE ELECTRIC & GAS COMPANY (Salem Nuclear Generating Station, Unit No. l)

Docket No. 50-272 Proposed Issuance of Amendment to Facility Operating License No. DPR-70 Enclosed please find the Staff's transcript corrections for :the::transcripts dated April 28,.29, and 30, 1980.

In making these corrections we encountered two problems.

The first is that the typewritten lines on some pages of the transcript do not coincide with the numbers printed down the side of the page.

If a particular page contained only one or two corrections located some*

distance apart, the number in the margin closest to the correction was used.

In cases where a *page contained a number of corrections, the appropriate number for the line on which a correction appeared was ascertained by counting the lines from the top of the page.

The second problem concerns the completeness of the record.

In attempting to verify a correction which I proposed to make., it was necessary to listen

- to the tape of the proceeding.

In doing so I learned that phrases appeared on the tapes which do not appear 1,n the transcript.

I do not know how pervasive the problem is at this time.

I briefly informed Mr. Shon of this problem on Thursday, May 22, 1980.

As Mr. Shon requested, the tapes were sent out to be reproduced on Friday, May 23, 1980, in case it is determined that copies must be provided to counsel for the parties.

A copy of this letter and our transcript corrections will be served on all parties to this proceeding, so that they will be informed of the problems now existing with the transcripts.

Sincerely, Janice E. Moore ol[mcl~Slrr-e---*. --.... --...................
