OF MEETING ON SHIFT MANNING FQR SALEM _UNIT 2 <

l\\ meeting was held in Bethesda, Maryland on *March 28~ -1980 with a representative i of the applicant to discuss sh.ift manning for Salem Unit 2.

The meeting was if' held at the applicant's r,equest: to *present its assessment of the impact of the 1

\\results of tile operator license examinations on shift manning for Un"it 2.

~umi~ar_\\f The a~pli~ant stated that 12 operators (8 SROs and~ ROs) have passed*the Salem Unit! 2 operator license examinations, which were graded in accordance with the ~ew grading criteria.* The applicant also stated that this number(i's not suffiCient to man the Unit 2 shifts for Mode 4 (hot shutdown) or above.';

The appl i.cant further stated. that the shift manning for Mode 5 (cold shutdown)\\;*~*

and Mode '6 (refueling) with the current licensed operators for Unit 2 can be

accomplished as follows.

There v!ill be three shifts of SROs (one per shift}

wher.e each one works 12-hour shifts for four days foll mved by tt-10 days off.

There will be four shifts of ROs (one per shift) where each one works 8-hour

shifts for six days follm1.1ed by two days off.

During fuel loading, an additiqri~1 SRO solely responsible for fuel loading operations will also be on shift.

The applicant estimated that the earliest date for fuel* 1 oading of Sal em *unit~~;

is April 21, 1980.

Once started, fuel loading* can be comple~d within four l::2!

days.

(Current estimates indicate that fuel loading. wi~p not,.start until the~;:_

,l\\dditional operators will be tested in June~/1980 and beyond. Hhen a suffic_ient number of operators have been licensed on Salem Unit 2, the applicant plans to increase the number of shifts and to limit the hours worked per shift to eight hours..
