201/430-7373 Production Aypril. 2, 1980 Mr. Boyce H. Grier, Director Off ice of Inspection and Enforcement Region 1 U.S *. Nuclear Regulatory Commission 631.Park Avenue King of Prussia,.PA 19406
Dear Mr. Grier:
NRC IE BULLETIN NO. 79-18 AUDIBILITY PROBLEMS FROM HIGH NOISE AREAS SALEM GENERATING STATION, UNIT NO. 1 The audibility survey under actual. conditions requested by Bulle-tin 79-18 has been completed and the following high noise, poor audibility areas were *identified:
a) containment building; b) outer penetration area; c) all pump rooms, i.e., WW,.RHR, etc.;
d) service water intake pump bays; e) circulating water intake; f) turbine £~ildi~g, elevations 88' and 100'.
Since plant personnel are.required to*wear ear J?rotectors in these high-noise *areas when the "unit is operating, it is possible the audible alarm signal will not always be* 'he:ard..
A visual alarm signal in conjunction with the existing audible alarm system should ensure the *probability of all.personnel being alerted.
Persons thus alerted can proceed to the neare~t* desig-nated location to receive further directions.
Therefore, we will install a system of hi.gh~intensi ty alarm lights in the identified high *noise :areas,-.said lights to be activated simultaneously.with.the *audible alarm system.
(In addition, we *will install additional "he*a:r-he*re 11* booths*.so that instructions can be received by the *personnel* aler.ted by the alarm l~ghts.)
Boyce H., Grier 2 -
4-2'""!80 Also, as a result of this survey, additional speakers will be added to various outside areas within the* station security

Sincerely, cc. Director, O;ffice of Inspection and* Enforcement
