Public Service Electric and Gas Company 80 Park Place Newark, N.J. 07101 Phone 201/430-7000 Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation u.s. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C.
20555 January 31, 1980 Attention:
Mr. D.G. Eisenhut, Acting Director Division of Operating Reactors REQUEST FOR EVACUATION TIME ESTIMATES UNITS NO. 1 AND 2 SALEM GENERATING STATION DOCKETS NO. 50-272 AND 50-311 To comply with your request of November 29, 1979, we transmitted a copy of your letter to the States of New Jersey and Delaware.
We have received estimates from the State of Delaware which we have included as an attachment to this letter.
We shall provide the requested information for the State of New Jersey when the estimates are available.
The evacuation estimates provided are not based upon detailed evacuation studies but rather upon estimates by experienced emer-gency planners in the State of Delaware.
To provide the detailed response that your letter seems to be requesting will require ad-ditional evacuation studies to be performed by the states.
The States of New Jersey and Delaware have informed us that they consider the method currently being used by the NRC to obtain re-sponses from the states on the topic of emergency planning is not appropriate for an activity important to the protection of the public.
The state~ intend to do what is necessary to protect the public but they feel that their emergency planning efforts would be im-proved if direct contact on this matter were made between the federal government (either the NRC or FEMA) and the states.
Very truly yours,
/n~.
