PStiG Public Service Electric and Gas Company 80 Park Place Newark, N.J. 07101 Phone 201 /430-7000 December 10, 1979 Mr. William P. Gammill, Acting Assistant Director for Operating Reactor Projects Division of Operating Reactors Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Co:mffiission Washington, DC 20555

Dear Mr. Gammill:

ACCEPTANCE OF ORAU RADIATION SAFETY TRAINING OF NRC STAFF FOR FACILITY VISITS In response to your letter to all power reactor licensees, dated October 2, 1979, we have reviewed the content of the Radiation Safety course presented by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) to members of the NRC staff who may, in the course of their duties, visit our facilities at Salem Generating Station.

We feel that the ORAU course should provide sufficient background to enable the staff individual to satisfactorily pass the brief radiation safety quiz we employ as a basis for waiving the generic training.

Upon satisfactory completion of the quiz, a plant specific indoctrination would be given.

It should be noted, however, that e~cort of the individual in the controlled areas of the plant will be required for radiation safety until such time as he has become familiar with plant layout.

This procedure is in accordance ~ith our e~tablished program and should be mutually beneficial while maintaining the proper margin of personal safety.

Very truly yours,
