DROPPED ROD EVENTS FACILITY OPERATING LICENSE DRP-70 UNIT NO. 1 SALEM GENERATING STATION DOCKET NO. 50-272 This letter confirms a telephone notification made by Public Service Electric & Gas Company to Mr. E. Reeves of the NRC on November 23, 197 9.
Westinghouse notified the NRC (letter from Mr. T.M. Anderson to Mr. V. Stello dated November 15, 1979) of a potential unreviewed safety question in the area of dropped rod accidents.
On Novem-ber 19,.197 9, a meeting was held in Bethesda, Maryland between the NRC, Westinghouse and the affected utilities on this subject.
At this meeting the following interim solution to this problem was agreed to by all the parties at the meeting.
Manual Rod Control be-tween 0% and 100% power with current rod insertion limits (RIL),
Automatic Rod Control between 0% and 90% power with current RIL, and Automatic Rod Control between 90% and 100% power with D bank rod position.gre~ter th~n 215 ste~s.
We concur with this interim solution and procedures were implemented on November 12,.1979 at Salem Unit No. 1 to conform to these require-ments.
