Mr. A. Schwencer, Chief Operating Reactors Branch 1 Division of Operating Reactors Gentlemen:

UNDERVOLTAGE PROTECTION OF SAFETY-RELATED EQUIPMENT -

UNIT NO. 1 SALEM NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION DOCKET NO. 50-272 This letter is in response to your letter dated July 30, 1979, which concerns the protection of safety-related equipment against sustained operation with degraded system voltage below 90%.

The proposed design, which will provide an additional level of undervoltage protection and which will be supplemental to the existing lower level (70%) of under-voltage protection, is as follows:

When the voltage of the station power transformer (13/4-Kv) feed to the 4-Kv Vital Bus falls below 90% for more than 30 seconds, an additional UV relay will be set to energize the existing multi-contact auxiliary relay.

This will in turn initiate the bus transfer to the other station power trans-former.

The enclosed Sketch-B and Drawing No. 203980BL4024-7 illustrate this scheme for lA Bus when fed from the No. 12 Station Power Transformer.

If the UV transfer should fail, the existing blackout logic will start the diesels.

Revised Technical Specifications will be provided 30 days after NRC approval of the proposed design.

If you should have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Very truly yours, Frank P. Libr zi General Manager -
