COMPONENT COOLING PUMP IMPELLERS 10CFR50.55(e) "SIGNIFICANT DEFICIENCY" NO. 2 UNIT SALEM GENERATING STATION On June l5, 1979 a verbal report was made to Region 1.,
Office o.f Inspection and Enforcement representative, Mr. A. T*oth, advising that. a. potential deficiency existed relative to the linear indications found on one (1) installed*component cooling pump impel.ler fabricated by Gould Pumps -
Seneca Fal.ls *.
This report was provided.
in accordance with the provisions of 10CFR50.55(.e).
The following supplemental information is hereby submitted pursuant to our initial. report and in accordance with the requirements of 10CFR50.55(e):

- Description of Deficiency All No. 2 Unit component cooling pump impell.ers have exhibited num;erous surface linear' indications
. of approximately 3/8" to 1./2" in l.ength.
Most of these indications have been found in the base of the impeller vanes.

Analysis of Conditions and Safety Implications Al.1 indications were revealed by visual. and dye penetrant inspection.
Anal.ysis of safety implications can only be made after inspection of impel.l.ers is completed by manufactu:i;-er. *simiiar cracks found on No. 1 Unit impell.ers were determined by the manufacturer not to be significant as they would not have propagated.
This does not imply that the same concl.usion appl.ies to the No. 2 Unit component cool.ing p~p.impell.ers as each case must be individually examined in order to ensure accuracy.
- Reported to Region l via Reportable Occurrence 79-45/0lP on June l, 1979.

One remains in a compone.nt cool.ing pump for system testing.
Three new impel.l.ers have been ordered and wi.1.J. be insta.l.l.ed. :prior to core.load..
A report on the N"o. 2. Unit impel.lers shoul.d be supp.lied by the manufacturer by Ju.ly 27,.1979.
