Dear Mr. Grier:

NRC IE BULLETIN NO. 79-03 NO. 1 AND 2 UNITS SALEM GENERATING STATION In response to your letter of March 12, 1979, transmitting NRC IE Bulletin No. 79-03 which was received on March 13, 1979, we have investigated this matter with respect to applicability to Salem No.*l and 2 Units.

The following are the results of our investiga-tion:

The subject bulletin which questioned incomplete fusion in type 304 and 316 SA-312 welded pipe, manufactured before mid November, 1978 by Youngstown Welding and Engineering Company, has been evaluated by the PSE&G Engineering Department.

PSE&G has determined that Salem Generating Station Units No. 1 and 2 have no safety-related pipe assemblies manufactured from the aforementioned material.

The following procedure was used to arrive at this conclusion.

  • The PSE&G Quality Assurance Department required Youngstown Welding and Engineering Company to list all their heat numbers for the above fusion welded pipe material supplied to the following fabricators and vendors:

Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corporation Youngstown's synopsis of all heat numbers for the above fabricators and vendors was run through Quality Assurance Department's computer at Salem, and no pipe assemblies manufactured from the above welded stainless steel were found to be present.
