Gentlemen:
Mr. Olan D. Parr, Chief Light Water Reactors Branch 3 Division of Project Management ROD DROP ANALYSIS UNREVIEWED SAFETY QUESTIONS NO. 1 AND NO. 2 UNITS SALEM NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION DOCKET NOS. 50-272 AND 50-3ll On March 28, 1979, Westinghouse notified the NRC, under 10 CFR 50.59, of the potential of certain single dropped rod events which could lead to calculated DNB ratios lower than reported to the NRC for certain *classes of Westinghouse plants.
This is discussed in detail in the letter NS-TMA~2063 dated March 30, 1979 from Westinghouse to John G. Davis, Acting Director of Inspection and Enforcement.
Salem Units 1 & 2 are four loop plants and do not have the potential problem as indicated in this letter since its design incorporates an auctioneering system which uses the highest output signal as input to the rod control system.
This design feature prevents the power overshoot and is more conservative as compared to the older design in which the flux signal is derived by averaging the signals from all NIS channels.
