Mr. A. Schwencer, Chief Operating Reactors Branch 1 Division of Operating Reactors Gentlemen:
eves PIPE CRACKS DUE TO EXCESSIVE CHARGING PUMP VIBRATIONS NO. 1 UNIT SALEM NUCLEAR GENERA'l 1ING STATION DOCKET NO. 50-272 The information contained in this letter is provided in response to your letter of August 31, 1978, requesting in-formation concerning pulsation dampers and other mechanical devices utilized to eliminate excessive positive displace-ment charging pump vibration.
No pulsation dampers are used at the positive displacement pump.
The piping configuration at the suction of the positive displacement pump was redesigned to eliminate a high point in the suction piping and thereby prevent vibration due to accumulation of evolved hydrogen gas in the pump suction line.
Also, four mechanical vibration dampers of PSE&G design were installed (two on the suction and two on the discharge side of the pump).
Refer to the attached isometric sketch for the location of the dampers.
The mechanical vibration damper design employs two carbon steel plates loaded by a coil spring, and the dampening adjusted by the spring tension.

October 27, 1978 The mechanical vibration dampers, and the redesign of the suction piping appears to have eliminated the vibration on the system as borne out in the visual examination of the system.
The affected piping system has not been analyzed for peak alternating stress values.
We trust that the above information is responsive to your concerns.
Should you have any further questions in this re-gard, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Attachment Very truly yours, 2~~~/*
