. SUBJECT:

NRC RADIATION PROTECTION INSPECTION REPORT 50-255/97010(DRSJ

Dear Mr. Palmisano:

On August 8, 1997, the NRC completed an inspection of your Palisades Nuclear

Generating Plant. The purpose of the inspection was to review the solid radioactive waste

management and shipping program. The enclosed report presents the results of that.

inspection.

The inspection was an examination of activities conducted under your license as they

relate to radiation safety and to compliance with the Commission's rules and regulations

and with the conditions of your license. The inspection consisted of a selective

examination of procedures and representative records, observations of work in progress,

and interviews with personnel.

Overall, our review indicated that the solid radioactive waste management and shipping

program at your facility was effectively implemented. In particular, the program to

transport radioactive material was in compliance with the recently revised Department of

Transportation and NRC regulations. However, the NRC identified several minor errors in

shipping procedures and packages which indicated a lack of attention to detail by plant

personnel. In addition, review of the status of solid radioactive waste treatment

equipment revealed material condition and housekeeping concerns in the purification filter

and demineralizer rooms which will be evaluated further during a future inspection.

No violations of NRC regulations were identified.

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC's "Rules and Practice," a copy of this letter

and its enclosures will be place in the NRC Public Document Room (PDR).

T. Palmisano
