Dear Congressman Upton:
August 2, 1994~
On June 29, 1994, you telecopied us a letter of June 2, 1994, from one of your constituents, Mr. Ellsworth Cummins.
The letter discussed an article in the Niles Daily Star on safety deficiencies at the Palisades nuclear power plant and an investigation by WNDU of South Bend, Indiana, concerning a power plant in the Ukraine.
First, let me emphasize that we believe the Palisades plant is being operated safely and with due consideration to public health and safety. However, we could not adequately address Mr. Cummins' specific concerns without receiving additional information.
We spoke to Mr. Cummins via telephone on July 11, 1994, the day after he had returned from vacation.
He told us he would send us more information.
On July lB, 1994, Mr. Cummins told us that he would send us* the article from the Niles Daily Star.
He also had contacted WNDU and was told that the power plant in the Ukraine referenced in his letter was a fossil plant, not a nuclear plant.
When we receive the copy ~f the above-mentioned article from Mr. Cummins, we will respond to you more fully.
He appears satisfied with the communications he has had with the member:; of my staff, and I trust that our response to you will adequately address his concerns.
