SECTION FOUR Conclusions nus study fuurn.1 that none of the four nuclear power plants In MJchigan are swtable sites for co-location of a low-level radioactive waste tsolauon facility.

Based on the available lnformauon listed 1n SecUon Flvc cf thJs report, the nuclear power f,Jant stte& and tmmediately adjacent areas did not meet several key exc usionary crtteria. These cntena include tb~se ln wh1ch areas er lnt~nse geoloasc proceses such as mass wasttni. erosion and the like D'lUlt be excluded. areas With high values of soil permeability must be excluded, areas exhibiting poor drainage and pondina must be excluded. and areas designated as wetlands must be excluded.

Although some speciflc detailed lnfonnation about the sttes. was unavailable..

the lnformauon that did ex1st wa2i enough for a propci-initial evaluat4on as requested by the Authority.

The goal of the &itlni criteria is to select a site wtth outstanding natural barriers 1n the event of a leak or spill breaching one of the many engineered barrters of the actual facmty and disposal process.

Relying only on the available WonnatJon that was reV1ewed. a low-level radioactive waste disposal faclltty would not meet the 1oals of the Siting Cntena Ad\\'lSory CommJttee, Act 204 of 1987, the Authority's and the NRC's slting objecuvcs and crtter1a and the overall goal& of the NRC'& performance objectives. All of Ule attes are located near either populated' or popular seasonal resort areas of the State and are located adjacent to one of the Great Lakes. These sites do not offer suitable. natural protection from an Inadvertent sp1l1 or undetected leak of the anUclpated waste m1Xture.

Finally, the shoreline setting or each of the nuclear power plants dots not offer the safety and secur1ty of alternative non-shore sites.

Wind*dnven flooding and setches wtll undoubta\\Jly play an important role in the integrity and longevity of th' site and facility throughout lts life.
