MECHANICAL PLUGS NRC Bulletin No. 89-01, dated May 15, 1989 discussed the failure of mechanical tube plugs supplied by Westinghouse that had been installed in nuclear steam generators.
The bulletin requested utilities to provide an act\\on plan to ensure_ that the p 1 ugs would continue to provide ade_quate reactor coo 1 ant pressure boundary integrity. The request presented in NRC Bulletin 89-01 applied to plugs fabricated from specific heats of Inconel 600.
Supplement 1 to the b~lletin was issued on November 14, 1990 and described failures of Inconel 600 mechanical tube plugs supplied by Westinghouse from heats not included in the original bulletin.
Supplement 2 to the bulletin; dated June 28, 1991, requests that actions similar to those requested in the original bulletin be extended to include all Westinghouse plugs fabricated from Inconel 600.
Specifically, Supplement 2 requests the following two actions for which responses are provided.
- Verification of the information provided in Table 2 of the referenced
- Westinghouse report.
Consumers Power Company Response As part of the 1990 Refueling Outage the Palisades Nuclear Plant replaced its steam generators.
The steam generators that were replaced contained th~
referenced Westinghouse mechanical tube plugs.
The new Palisades steam generators contain only Combustion Engineering rolled tube plugs.

Consumers Power Company Response Since there are no Westinghouse Inconel 600 mechanical tube plugs now installed in the Palisades* steam generators, none of the actions in the Actions Requested will be taken.
