OF MEETING WITH CONSUMERS POWER COMPANY AND INDIANA MICHIGAN POWER COMPANY On November 7, 1990, Mr. John Zwolinski, Mr. Robert Pierson, and Mr. C. E.

  • Carpenter toured Palisades Power Plant/Consumers Power Company and met with

Discussions were held with senior Pal~sades Plant officiali, including Mr.

Gerald Slade - Plant Manager, Mr. Dave Vandewalle - Director of Safety and Licensing, and Mr David Joos -

Vic~ President, Energy Supply Servic~s. The topics of conversation were:.

a)

Steam Generator Replacement Project -

c) a brief overview of the outage progress to ~ate, presently.ahead of schedul~ and below projected exposures and radwaste volume, slightly above projected percons; Zebra Mussel infestation - presently not found to be more than a slight concern but being tracked;.and, unexpected activation of the ~ohcrete plug removed from coniai~ment for the SGRP -

the concrete was found to contain trace amounts of Europium*

(~pproximately 1.0E-6 uCi/gm) with a half-life of '13yr. *This amount is one order of magnitude greater than background.

Licensee believes that the concrete became activated since initial startup. The removed plug will be stored on site and track~d~

After this discussion, Messrs. Pierson, Clayton and Carpenter toured containment and observed the Narrow Gap Welding* of the Steam Generator hot leg.

On Thursday, November 8, 1990, Messrs. Zwolinski, Pierson, Clayton and Carpenter met a~ D. C. Cook Nuclear Power Plant with the Resident Inspectors, Mr. Jim Isom

The six staff members sat in on the Morning Plant Status Meeting.

Aft~r the meeting, the staff toured the secondary buildings, the control rooms, and the spent fuel pool area.

Following the plant tour, a working lunch with senior plant personnel was held.

Present were Mr. M. Alexich - Vice President, Nuclear Operations, Mr. A. Bird ~

Plant Manager, Mr. K. Baker - Assistant Plant Manager, Production,_Mr. J.

Rutkowski *- Assistant Plant Manager, Technical Support, and Mr. R. Rickman -
