RESPONSE TO APRIL 21, 1988 REQUEST TO REEVALUATE THERMAL DEGRADATION OF 2400 VOLT BUS FEEDER CABLES Kenneth W Berry Director Nuclear Licensing NRC letter, dated April 21, 1988 requested Consumers Power Company to reevaluate the thermal degradation that may have occurred to feeder cables to non-safeguards Bus IE.

The request also stated that the reevaluation should be consistent with Arrhenius methodology.

Consumers Power Company has performed a detailed analysis to determine the useful life of the Bus lE feeder cable from the Station Power Transformer based on the Arrhenius Methodology.

The conclusion, based on this analysis, is that the feeder cable has a useful life of 9.9 years beyond May 16, 1988.

The safety significance of this particular cable will be reduced when the Palisades Plant Modification to improve Off site Power Reliability is completed.

This modification is scheduled to be installed during the 1988 refueling outage, see September 24, 1987 submittal.

The planned modification will place reduced reliance on the referenced feeder cable as a backup to the normal electrical supply.

Therefore the useful life greatly exceeds the period that reliability is.required.

The analysis is included as an attachment to this letter.
