IMPLEMENTATION OF TMI ACTION ITEM II.K.3.5 - AUTOMATIC TRIP OF REACTOR COOLANT PUMPS - GENERIC LETTER NO. 86 COMPLETION DELAY NRC Generic Letter No. 86-06 dated May 29, 1986 requested, for those licensees who choose to endorse the CEOG methodology on reactor coolant pump trip, to develop a schedule for submittal within 45 days from receipt of the letter.

Accordingly, on July 28, 1986, Consumers Power Company submitted a schedule

-for completion of the requested information. Our intention was to complete the required actions by November 6, 1986. Our completion delay and the reasons for it, as detailed below, have been discussed with the NRC Palisades Project Manager.

Due to circumstances arising from the current plant shutdown, the committed actions are not now completed. We have completed the majority of the work, however, appropriate personnel have not been available for completion of the technical review with regard to identification of instrument uncertainties.

In addition to the above, the CEOG effort to develop generic uncertainties for a harsh environment has been re-scheduled for completion by April 1987.

Our independent evaluation of instrument uncertainties and review of their impact upon existing trip settings will be complete by December 5, 1986. The final reviews and approval of trip requirements incorporating the results of the CEOG effort will not be finalized until May 1987.

It is our intent to submit the requested information by May 30, 1987. At that time, all work on this topic will be incorporated into the submittal. If our preliminary independent review of trip requirements demonstrates that the existing trip settings do not have adequate conservatism built~in, we will submit to you, by December 15, 1986, notification of planned changes and justifications for such.
