REACTOR VESSEL LEVEL MONITORING SYSTEM - NUREG-0737 ITEM II.F.2 -

OPEN ITEMS A meeting between members of your staff, NRC's contractor from ORNL, Consumers Power Company, and our contractor, Technology for Energy Corporation, was held on August 28, 1986 in Bethesda.

The subject of the meeting was the proposed modifications for resolution of the NUREG-0737 issue of Inadequate Core Cooling Instrumentation and, in particular, our Reactor Vessel Level Monitoring System.

The modifications are scheduled to be completed during the next refueling outage.

Two open items resulted from our meeting.

The first item is the verification of the type of sensors to be used in the Reactor Vessel Level Monitoring System.

Three types of sensors were developed by Technology for Energy Corporation, the "Fast," Slow," and "Signature of Uncovery" types.

Only the "Fast" sensor will be employed at Palisades.

The second item concerns the cable to be used in the !CCI system upgrades.

New environmentally qualified (EQ) cable is to be used for the reactor water level monitoring system.

New EQ cable was also used inside containment for the 16 upgraded In-Core Instruments/Core Exit Thermocouples.

Upgrading of the subcooling margin monitor will not require new EQ cable as the existing qualified cable will be used.
