SEP TOPIC IX-5-VENTILATION SYSTEMS The' Palisades Integrated Plant Safety Assessment Report, NUREG-0820, and Supplement No. 1, Sections 4.28 and 2.8.2 respectively, noted that auxiliary feedwater junction b.oxes J-569 and 570 required cooling.
Consumers Power had committed to provide cooling fans for the equipment to ensure adequate venti-lation in the event of loss of room ventilation.
The NRC staff found that resolution acceptable.
During the 1983-84 outage, modifications to the auxiliary feedwater (AFW) system took place.
AFW instrumentation in J-569 and 570 was either removed or disconnected permanently.
Some safety related equipment remained in the junction boxes, but the heat load inside the boxes from this equipment was determined to be less than 12 watts and determined not to add sufficient heat to exceed the operating conditions of the equipment.
Also, the internal room heat load, determined by test (reference Consumers Power Company submittal of November 1, 1982), does not exceed the manufacturers rated temperatures for the equipment.
Therefore, because of the removal of the major heat sources and temperature sensitive devices, with the AFW modifications, and because the remaining equipment would remain operable under normal conditions and with loss of room ventilation, the cooling fans were not added.
Consumers Power Company considers this issue resolved.
