Docket No. 50-255 LS05-84-06-005 June 4~ 1984 LICENSEE:
CONSUMERS POWER COMPANY FACILITY:
Palisades Nuclear Power Plant
SUBJECT:
MAY 23, 1984 MEETING CONCERNING AUXILIARY FEEDWATER LINE On May 23, 1984, we met with representatives of Consumers Power Company (CPC) in Bethesda, Maryland to discuss the auxiliary feedwater line at Palisades. A list of the people who attended the meeting is attached.
At the beginning of the meeting CPC provided us with the enclosed agenda.
CPC explained the original design of the feedwater line which included a sparger inside the steam generator.
Then CPC described the condition of the feedwater line when it was inspected.
The auxiliary feedwater line in one steam generator was broken and another one was cracked.
CPC proceeded to explain the methods which were used to analysis the failures and the results of the failure analysis. Finally, CPC showed us the design of the new pipe, liner, and nozzle and explained why the new design should not experience the same kind of failure.
CPC used several drawings and pictures to augment the presentation.
CPC expects to approve the design change under the provisions of 10 CFR 50.59.
We asked CPC to provide a copy of the pictures and failure analysis results to us for use in a generic review.
CPC agreed to send the information to us informally. However, CPC indicated that the company does not intend to seek NRC approval of the design or make a formal submittal to the NRC.
